Acclaimed for his "subtle musicality and grand voice," baritone Hyung Yun has performed on many of the most renowned opera stages across the United States. At the Metropolitan Opera, he has taken on roles such as Valentin in Faust, Ping in Turandot, Lescaut in Manon with Renée Fleming, Silvio in Pagliacci, Count Nottingham in Roberto Devereux with Sondra Radvanovsky, Albert in Werther, Zurga in Les pêcheurs de perles with Matthew Polenzani, and Belcore in L’elisir d’amore. His appearances with Los Angeles Opera include Angelotti in Tosca, Marcello in La bohème, Micheletto Cibo in Die Gezeichneten, and Lescaut in Manon with Rolando Villazón.
In recent seasons, Yun has returned to The Met as Ping in Turandot, performed Germont in La traviata with both Calgary Opera and Opera Omaha, Yamadori in Madama Butterfly with Dallas Opera, and the title role in Rigoletto with Opera Columbus. Other notable operatic engagements include Marcello in La bohème with San Francisco Opera, Enrico in Lucia di Lammermoor with Minnesota Opera, Tulsa Opera, and Opera Carolina, and the title role in Eugene Onegin at Madison Opera. At Washington National Opera, his performances have included Germont in La traviata, Sharpless in Madama Butterfly, and Lescaut in Manon Lescaut. He has also sung roles such as Luna in Il trovatore with Lyric Opera of Chicago and Valentin in Faust with Austin Opera.
Yun’s concert performances include Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9 with Tokyo City Symphony, Verdi’s Requiem at Lincoln Center, and Carmina Burana with both the Colorado and San Francisco Symphonies. He has also appeared in Händel’s Messiah with the Winston-Salem, Memphis, and Phoenix Symphonies, and Nielsen’s Symphony No. 2 with the Philadelphia Orchestra.
Early in his career, Yun distinguished himself as a young artist at Washington National Opera, performing the title role in Don Giovanni under the direction of Plácido Domingo. He later returned as a guest artist to portray Marcello in La bohème. Yun also appeared as Ford in Falstaff at the Tanglewood Festival, conducted by Maestro Seiji Ozawa, and further honed his craft as part of the Merola Young Artist Program at San Francisco Opera, where he again performed Marcello in La bohème.
Mr. Yun is the recipient of numerous accolades, including The Sullivan Foundation Award, the Connecticut Opera Company Scholarship, Santa Fe Opera Awards, and was a National Finalist in the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions.
